It’s rare I’m not in a mood for a solid heartfelt song, so when musician Ben Lapidus presented me with his new single, “Hope You Know”, I knew it needed to be shared with the world.
Ben, who’s made a splash in the music industry in unconventional ways, settles down and presents a tear-jerker in “Hope You Know”. He’s responsible for writing the music and lyrics/starring in the Off-Broadway musical “Pop Punk High” and brings some of that fundamental understanding of the genre in this piece: ““I came of age in the pop punk and emo scene of the mid-aughts, playing shows and writing songs in every spare moment. A lot of the music I loved was crude and immature, or corny and self-absorbed. But there was something about those songs that made my adolescent angst and insecurity feel like something communal, even universal.”
“Hope You Know” details the difficulty in maintaining a relationship, packed with similes and thematic mastery. I’m a sucker for emotional songs that drop a month into the lyrics – much like in Citizen’s “Night I Drove Alone” and Dance Gavin Dance’s “Tree Village”, the chorus in “Hope You Know” starts with “In the grey October sea the waves break over me“, immersing the listener into that cold, depressing month.
This marks Ben’s fourth song to hit streaming services – and it’s his most exciting and polished one yet. Just listening to “Hope You Know” on repeat writing this article brings me the emotional connection of the genre that few bands manage to do anymore. Check out Ben’s new song below!
