Portland based Indie Rockers returned to Chicago Tuesday evening and were greeted by loyal fans that packed the venue to capacity despite playing this town less than a year ago. Since the band’s formation in 2000, they have developed a solid following and are always well received.

The band’s musical compositions touch on a variety of historical subjects utilizing instruments ranging from accordion, horn and mandolin in addition to guitar, bass, keys and drums.   Lead vocalist Colin Meloy’s  guitar work compliments the overall feel of the music. Fans seemed entranced as he performed, feeling the connection as he gazed on the crowd. Chris Funk on led guitar, Nate Query bass, Jenny Conlee on keys John Moen on drums have all been with the band for almost two decades and are an integral part of the band’s overall music.

The performance began with the stage mostly dark, only illuminated by light towers to either side as they performed Don’t Go to the Woods”. “January Hymn” and “Carolina Low” after which the performance shifted into full gear!

During the more than two hour performance they covered material from their two and a half decade history, much to the delight of the crowd attending.  Their fifteen song set included “Burial Ground”, “Oh No!”, “Severed” and “I Was Meant for the Stage” among others.

Opening the evening  were Chicago based Indie Rockers Ratboys.  Lead guitarist Julia Steiner warmed the crowd with her playing and vocals, getting the crowd ready for the main event. Bassist Sean Neumann, David Sagan on guitar and Danny Lyons on drums round out the group.

They will share the stage with The Decemberists on select dates of this tour.
