Dreamcatcher’s boundary-breaking K-Pop aesthetics should be on every alt fan’s radar – and here’s why

What if we told you there’s a group mixing traditional K-Pop sensibilities with power metal riffs and symphonic rock melodies? What if we told you they sound like Bring Me The Horizon, Nightwish, Babymetal, and CHVRCHES all rolled into one? Think we’ve lost it?? Nope. Enter: Dreamcatcher.

Forget everything you thought you knew about K-Pop, because this seven-piece girl group from Seoul are switching things up big time. JiU, SuA, Siyeon, Handong, Yoohyeon, Dami, and Gahyeon, better known as Dreamcatcher, have become known as ‘the face of rock in K-Pop’. If you’re into bands like BMTH, Icon For Hire, or Vukovi, Dreamcatcher’s combination of infectious hooks and danceable rhythms with thundering drums and huge riffs will be a winning formula. And if you’re a fan of the anime ‘King’s Raid’ on Amazon Prime, you’ve already heard them – their song ‘Eclipse’ is the opening theme.

“Rock was not a common genre at the time we were about to debut, so we wanted to experiment with something new and blaze a trail,” said SuA in a 2022 interview. “And the sound of rock is so impactful. Now, it has become a genre that defines our musical identity.”

Got your attention? Jump right in with ‘MAISON’ and ‘VISION’ – we guarantee you’ll be headbanging in no time (and if you feel a sudden urge to try to replicate those perfectly synchronised dance routines, we won’t tell). Then check out the killer riff on ‘BOCA’ (it kicks in at 1:12), as well as some powerhouse vocals from Siyeon and Yoohyeon.

In an industry that can sometimes feel stale and repetitive, Dreamcatcher are breaking boundaries and bringing something truly different to the alt table. The group are currently in the middle of their world tour and recently released their ninth EP, [VillainS].
