Sea of Trees are a San Diego-based progressive post-hardcore band that should be on your radar, if they are not already. Led by the dual-vocal interplay of Sasha Gordy and Aldrynne Eslava, this group’s dynamic sound recalls everything from contemporary genre stars Dance Gavin Dance, to classic touchstones such as The Used.
Today, Sea of Trees is premiering their new EP “Boss Battle!” exclusively on The New Fury. I spoke to the band’s vocalists about the inspiration behind the new tracks, which you can stream below.
“Chaos Theater”
“Sinoe, Sasha, and I collaborated to write “Chaos Theater.” This song is centered around the comic and movie “Scott Pilgrim.” While It’s not directly about “Scott Pilgrim,” we certainly derived metaphors from it. The tone of the song itself starts off pretty heavy into some funkiness back into more of a chaotic nature. Sort of like a boss battle theme. Hence why we named the title of this release “Boss Battle.” It also ties into the Scott Pilgrim theme we have going in this song as well. We have been opening our shows with this song since we’ve written it and I feel as though the reason is because it’s such a mood setting song. It sets the tone for our live shows, which if you have seen us live you know how it is, and is a great representation of what Sea of Trees’ staple sound is.” – Aldrynne Eslava
“Lack of Cortisol”
“I was in an unhealthy long term relationship that I ended shortly before the writing of Lack of Cortisol. This song allowed me to express the raw emotion I was feeling and helped me become my own person. I gain so much power from singing Lack of Cortisol, it affirms the control I have over my life and my choices. If you’re in a scary situation I hope this song gives you strength. No matter what you never have to give up your happiness for someone else, fight for yourself and your well being. There is help everywhere.” – Sasha Gordy
