The Album That Changed My Life (Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation)

With the mass amount of genres I have been exposed to, it soon became hard to narrow it down to one specific album. Every time I came to a conclusion I was reminded of another album and the process further repeated. Finally after pondering upon this for days on end I have concluded that the album that has impacted me the most would have to be, Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation by Funeral For A Friend.

In my eyes they’re one of the most transcending post-hardcore bands in the music scene. In 2003, FFAF released their first full length album, it received great reviews from British music press and at that time I wasn’t familiar with the band. One day playing Burnout 3, I stumbled upon Rookie of the Year and was instantly engrossed by this new sound. Up until now I had just listened to softer genres, such as 3 Doors Down, Chevelle, Incubus, and other bands of that relating alternative type. Hearing all this passionate screaming, I couldn’t help but wonder what he (Matthew Davies-Kreye) was even saying. Further investigation led me to these lyrics:

“Thank you for making me
Worthless in your eyes
In hope and desperation
I’ll find my only light”

Now I won’t say I’ve had the worst life growing up, but I will admit there were points in my life where I felt worthless in my parents eyes. They were constantly fighting and I felt as if I may have been the reason. I was born when my mother was really young, and I felt like a mistake. After listening to this song throughout the game, I later decided to go download the album this song belonged to. I listened to this album repeatedly and even if it seemed as though my life was invariably revolving around chaos, I could always fall back on this album. Just turn up my headphones, and suddenly I faded into my own world and before that moment, nothing had ever felt so perfect . I guess you can say for me, this album holds a nostalgic feeling that will never grow old. To this day I still catch myself reminiscing upon this album ritually. If anything, this album ultimately reminds me of where I came from. Through all the rugged life experiences I’ve had to surpass, I can gratefully say I’m a stronger person. I won’t be cliche and say this band or album saved my life but it definitely made my life sweet, when things went sour. This band will eternally hold a special place in my heart and it makes me happy to know that they’re unyielding. I have the highest hopes that they impact other fans as deeply as they’ve impacted me.
