Sneaking Out of Heaven: An Evening with Waterparks

By Melanie Mae Bryan

Waterparks brought their ‘Sneaking Out of Heaven’ tour to The Fillmore in Charlotte, NC this past Saturday night. Fans swarmed the venue in droves for a chance to see “God’s favorite boy band.” As if that weren’t enough to bring the crowd, they also brought along alt-rock duo Loveless for the ride.

LOVELESS

Loveless is made up of Julian Comeau and Dylan Tirapelli-Jamail. Having formed in Los Angeles in 2020, they are relatively newcomers to the scene. Despite their age as a duo, they’ve quickly become a fan favorite, with a large thanks to their popular covers on TikTok. They have since released their debut EP, End of an Era, and the album, Loveless I.

Julian leapt into the stage in a burst of excitement. Each band member at this point was wearing a Krispy Kreme hat from the famous donut chain. They didn’t keep them on for long, but clearly wanted to express their excitement for being in NC. Julian crooned and danced his way into the crowd’s hearts, though many already seemed to be familiar with the band.

WATERPARKS

Waterparks took the stage to a deafening roar of screaming fans. No stranger to the spotlight, vocalist Awsten Knight is something of an icon. Changing his hair color to correspond with each album era, tonight was his current red and black style.

Made up of Knight, Geoff Wigington, and Otto Wood, Waterparks was formed in Houston, TX in 2011. Their discography includes Double Dare (2016), Entertainment (2018), Fandom (2019), Greatest Hits (2021), and Intellectual Property (2023). Some of their popular songs include “I Miss Having Sex But At Least I Don’t Wanna Die Anymore”, “Turbulent”, “Stupid For You”, “Fuck About It (feat. blackbear)”, and “FUNERAL GREY”.

The stage was set with “buildings”, representing Heaven. One by one, each member appeared to “exit” Heaven and enter the stage. They launched right into “Watch What Happens Next” as Awsten ran up to the microphone.

Waterparks showed their versatility this evening with a playlist spanning their entire discography, from pop-punk anthems to more introspective songs. Awsten was a force of nature onstage, never staying in one place for too long. The band’s chemistry onstage was undeniable as they performed every note perfectly in sync.

This was my first Waterparks show, but definitely will not be the last. If you haven’t caught this tour yet, I highly recommend it, and you can check out the remaining tour dates below!
