The Interview:

How’s it going guys? Please introduce yourselves and what you do in the band.

Hey! We are We Butter The Bread With Butter, a Rock/Metal/Pop Band from Germany.

I’m Marci and I play guitar. Together with Can, our drummer, we write most of the songs. I am also responsible for creating our stage show. We always have much light equipment with us and want to create special moments on stage.

I’m sure you guys get this question every time you do an interview, but I have always been curious on how the band name came about?

Yeah, you’re right. This question followed us over the years but I’m pleased to tell you the story again. Actually it’s no big deal. When we formed this band, there was this trend to have really brutal band names with death, cruelty and blood in it. But we started to make music to leave something positive. Music should be used for great feelings and positive emotions. There was also the trend to have really long band names. So we decided to put these things together. Buttering a bread is something everyone does. We are pretty normal guys with pretty normal habits. So we wanted to represent this in our band name as well.

I see you guys will be touring the States in fall, is this your first tour here or have you been here before?

Oh yes! It’s our first U.S. tour ever and we are really excited. We waited very long for this to happen. All of us have never been in the States before, so we expect great adventures in your country.

How is the music scene in Germany and are there any hometown bands you want to give a shout out to?

To be honest, we are not so much into a music scene. There are many scenes over here and everyone is really into its own scene. That’s pretty sad sometimes because it’s hard to create a connected community. We want to cross these borders. We love everything from classical to hard music which is good.

For all of the places you have toured so far, what has been your favorite?

Wow. Hard question. We had so many good times on the road. Actually there is no real favorite. Our Russian tour was pretty special! There are crazy cities in Russia. We also love to tour in countries which are connected to the sea. Scandinavia, France, UK…

Do you have any tour stories that stick out (that won’t land you in jail)?

Of course, we had crazy experiences on tour. On our last UK tour, we got caught by the police because our van was way too much overloaded. So we had to stop and could just move on with a second van. That was pretty annoying but of course also adventurous. One day on our Eastern Europe tour, our van iced up and we had to lock the doors with our belts (which wasn’t very secure and we heard the craziest stories about these countries before). Actually, every time something crazy happens it’s related to the vehicle you travel in.

What musical influences do you guys have?

Like I said, we are very open minded to different kinds of music, so we also have many different musical influences. Can, our drummer, is a really good piano player and gets many inspirations from classical music. We love all the bands which show us world music. Music that connects different people, gives you positive emotions where you can forget everything else. It doesn‘t matter if this is Metal, Pop music or Rock.

If you could create your ideal tour, what bands would you bring with you on the road?

Our ideal tour would go around the world together with Linkin Park, Metallica, Lady Gaga, Rammstein, Red Hot Chili Peppers…and we would be the headliner…of course!

Tell us a little about your guy’s upcoming release Goldkinder?

Goldkinder is the best we ever did. It shows our personal and musical development we went through the last years. With Goldkinder, we found ourselves and the music we want to perform. It combines a hard sound with pretty melodies. The vocals moved more in the center and we ruminated more about the lyrics and how we could place it to the music.

I know you guys are signed with Redfield Records for the previous albums, are you keeping this release independent or are you scouting labels? If so, any specific labels you have in mind?

Yes we have been signed with Refield Records for the last two albums, but last year we decided to go our own way. So we started to make music independently. For Goldkinder, we work together with BMG. This gives us the opportunity to work for ourselves and decide by ourselves which next steps we want to go. We are really happy with that situation.

Do you have any tour advice for the upcoming bands and what to watch out for in the industry?

There are not so many useful advices. The only one we could give is to tour, tour, tour! In a time where it is really hard to sell copies of your album, it’s even more important to be on the road and represent your music live to the people.  You should watch out with whom you work with and what are your preferences in life. You can get lost pretty easy in the music industry. Be yourself and different could be the only useful advice for every band.

Well guys, I hope the states impress the hell out of you guys and I will be seeing you Sept. 22nd in Phoenix.

Thank you very much for this interview. We are really looking forward to tour the states and of course we hope to see you in Phoenix!
