A month or so, we noted that Linkin Park’s “In The End” was poised to become the first nu-metal song in history to reach one billion streams on Spotify. No doubt anchored by strong placements on several of Spotify’s nu-metal playlists (including Spotify’s “00s Rock Anthems”, which has over 3.6 million followers), the song (and album, obviously) are both two of the biggest of the new millennium. Now, the song has reached that coveted one billion stream mark on Spotify, becoming the first nu-metal song in history to do just that.
It’s pretty incredible, when you think about it. After all, Linkin Park weren’t expected to have Hybrid Theory become arguably the most important rock album of the new millennium – in fact, they were hoping to sell 500,000 copies of it. The release of the single to radio in late 2001 eventually pushed the album to sell hundreds of thousands of copies a week (which LP was already doing anyway), eventually providing the momentum that made the band a household name.
