In 2018, a previously unknown band by the name of Vexes turned out one of the best Deftonescore albums of the year, or really, any year. That album was Ancient Geometry, and it ended up on quite a few AOTY lists. The band, who lie somewhere between Deftones, Thrice, Cave In, and your favorite alt-metal bands, were worthy of said hype – but you can’t help thinking Vexes deserved a lot more attention on the national stage.
They’re probably going to get it on their upcoming double (!!!) album, Imagine What We Could Destroy///If Only Given Time. Nobody can say Vexes aren’t embarking on a journey of ambitious proportions, of course. Given our single-based music culture now, the double album is almost a myth of sorts. If there’s anyone who can pull it off, however, it’s Vexes, whose musical pedigree is simply one of the more intriguing out there. The band’s first single, “Beyond The Sinking”, is striking in that it blazes new trails while not being too dissimilar to their older material. It won’t be a surprise to see Vexes garner the kind of fanbase they’ve worked hard to cultivate – all it takes is you listening.
Commenting on the single, vocalist Charlie Berezansky states:
“Many of the songs deal with today’s obsession with the public eye, seeing and being seen, and the hold that has over all of us, especially with social media and having lost much of the human connection we once had. We have a general disdain for the intrusiveness of these platforms but at the same time understand their importance, however fleeting that may be.”
