Forget what any critic tells you – Paradise Lost does not begin and end with Icon and Draconian Times. Pretty much every album they’ve made has been worth listening to – even their forays into Depeche Mode-esque influences, Host, were quite good. Their newest album, The Plague Within is our Album Of The Week for good reason – it’s a stone cold instant classic album that’s surprisingly accessible to newcomers.
When the band finally decided to go back to the heavier roots in the mid-2000’s, something clicked for them again. And it certainly did on their new album, The Plague Within, which sees (or hears) vocalist Nick Holmes crushing all souls with his vocal performance on tracks like “An Eternity Of Lies” and “Beneath Broken Earth”. The Plague Within is a tour-de-force of doom and heavy metal fury that easily stands up to previous classic albums. It’s astonishing and even more of an accomplishment that Paradise Lost is so fresh over 25 years after their formation.
