The list of albums that producer Ross Robinson has worked on over the years is a laundry list, to be certain. A highly-influential laundry list, really. First entering the production helm on Fear Factory’s scrapped 1991 album Concrete, Robinson went on to release influential albums like Korn’s 1994 self-titled debut record, important records from Soulfly, Limp Bizkit, and Slipknot, and that’s just to name a few from the ’90s. He then pivoted soon after to work with bands as diverse as Glassjaw, At The Drive-In, The Blood Brothers, From First To Last, and even more recent bands like Touche Amore and Night Verses.
Undoubtedly, Robinson has helped shape the last 30+ years of popular rock, metal, and post-hardcore music – yet it’s his production on legendary nu-metal records that has always been his claim to fame. However, he hasn’t always loved the label of the “Godfather Of Nu-Metal” that many associate him with. In fact, in the past he’s criticized bands of the genre for not taking further the genre that his production techniques helped put on the map.
In a new discussion with Metal Hammer, though, Robinson explained that he’s apparently cool with the label now:
“I was extremely resistant to it when they started doing it during the Glassjaw days. I didn’t wanna be lumped in with all of the followers and the scene of silliness that happened afterwards, and I had a problem with that. Now, I think it’s sweet. If people wanna call me that, good.”
Apparently time heals all wounds, as they say. It’s pretty simple, though – you can’t mention nu-metal and even post-hardcore without the likes of Terry Date and Ross Robinson.
