My very first CD was a Megadeth Greatest Hits straight from my dad who had a furtive interest in thrash metal, among other classic genres. Thanks to growing up on Guitar Hero, I grew fond of the style and loved to see how fast-paced and intense these bands could go. Bands like Periphery come along only once in a blue moon. Metal bands who can blend technicality, groove, melody, and heaviness all into one package are all too rare indeed, whether now or a decade ago. Alongside cohorts like Tesseract, Volumes, and Animals As Leaders that emerged at the tail end of the 2000’s/early 2010’s, Periphery’s brand of forward-thinking progressive metal has undergone quite an evolution indeed. With 6 records released in their career to date, including an impressive double album in Juggernaut Alpha + Omega, Periphery’s journey to independence started with the release of their self-titled debut album – which turns 10 years old today.
If there’s one good thing to come out of the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the entire world, it’s that there’s more time than ever to discover new music. Specifically, there’s an exciting crop of young hardcore and metal bands that are releasing good music – and we have a special one for you today with Canadian metalcore band Held In Secret. While a younger act in the scene with just a debut EP to their name, the band is gearing up to release their sophomore EP, Nomads, a month from now. We’re excited to bring you the band’s title track for the upcoming EP, which features powerhouse vocalist Garrett Russell from Silent Planet.
