Mosh pits and crowd surfing are basically two givens when it comes to many genres of (live) music, and we’re not even talking about just hardcore, metalcore, and more extreme genres. Even pop-punk and hip-hop acts frequently see the fun happening – but that definition of “fun” might be different for those who don’t often attend a live show. While it’s possible not every fan at a show might be familiar or educated on crowd surfing or mosh pit etiquette, Aussie post-hardcore/alt-rock band Trophy Eyes were criticized by a fan on Instagram for supposedly making the “majority” of fans at the show (who were there to see headliner Against The Current) feel uncomfortable with the moshing and crowd surfing.
Needless to say, plenty of discourse ensued on social media, with the vast majority of people siding with Trophy Eyes. In fact, the commenter got taken to the cleaners by the band themselves, where they simply replied “fuck you” to the commenter for insulting the band’s fanbase at the show.
The person then proceeded to respond with something completely unfounded and false, that apparently Trophy Eyes encourages their fans to hurt each other. Yes, this is a serious thing that happened, with again, no prior evidence to provide evidence of. Crazy, really.
As many on social media noted, crowd surfing and especially mosh pits are part and parcel of a live music experience, especially during certain genres of music. In fact, there’s very few where some form of rowdiness is not going to happen in some form, so it’s always best to stand near the back or away from larger crowds if you’re more of an introvert.
