This Day In Music History: June 25th, 2010 – Parkway Drive makes waves with ‘Deep Blue’

Metalcore is a genre rife with lyrics and themes of water. The Amity Affliction have fashioned part of their career over the subject. Undertow memes? They’re not just for fans of Tool’s 1993 debut album. Even Thrice’s post-hardcore sound took a different route when they explored the four elements of air, fire, earth, and water on their famed Alchemy Index series.

Perhaps it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise that Parkway Drive opted for it on their third full-length album, Deep Blue Compared to the band’s previous two records, though, Deep Blue arrived like a tidal wave. Led by “Home Is For The Heartless” and “Sleepwalker”, the formula hadn’t actually changed much. Yet its success ensured that Deep Blue was the PWD album that brought international success, not simply more of an Australian fanbase.

In fact, it led to a huge summer of touring for Parkway Drive, where they gained a plethora of fans on the (then-annual) Vans Warped Tour. Furthermore, many of Australia’s finest metal and hardcore bands would find worldwide success after – particularly The Amity Affliction, Northlane, Polaris, In Hearts Wake, and a host of others.
