One can only imagine how people in the late 1990s must have felt when listening to this album for the first time. Around The Fur is a great sophomore effort that really shows how much just how much Deftones had grown since the release of their debut album Adrenaline. What a lot of people don’t realize while listening to this album is that it was simply the predecessor to something even greater, White Pony, released in the year 2000.
Around The Fur may be a transitional album for Deftones lying somewhre between alternative metal and nu-metal, but it’s a great album all the same. Even now, it sounds as fresh and vital as it did in 1997. Chino Moreno’s vocals are plastering here, and it’s on songs like “Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)” and the title track that the band shows the kind of atmosphere that would set them apart from any band in the music scene. A surefire alternative metal classic.
