The Word Alive may have had a somewhat uneven career thus far. Their EP Empire and debut full-length Deceiver were incredibly well-received by the music community, and jump-started a successful career. The next two albums, Life Cycles and Real, were (at least in this writer’s opinion) slightly less focused, but still contained powerful tracks like “Astral Plane” and “Play The Victim”. That left me wondering where the band would go next. Regardless of how you feel about their music, they’re one of the hardest working bands in music, and that’s something to admire. They’ve always been one of the few bands in their genre to really emphasize and embrace the guitar riff, and with their new track, “Sellout”, they’re doing anything but selling out.
Stream the song below and get amped for their new album, Dark Matter, which drops next month. If the two singles are any indication, this could be their best album yet. Two-thirds of the way through the song, there’s a rather impressive scream from Telle Smith that is honestly comparable to Chester Bennington’s scream in “Given Up”. Underoath vibes everywhere? This listener thinks so.
