On the 30th of November, The Plot In You played an intimate sold out headlining show to some lucky fans at the Howler in Melbourne. This was a great chance for people to see what they were in for at the festival or those that weren’t attending to just enjoy a show purely for them. They were joined by The Motion Below and Tapestry, both hailing from the city of Melbourne.
The room was scattered with people, mostly dressed in black or band tees chatting away waiting for the show to start. It was a sold-out show and the room was slowly filling up with people eager for it to start.
The Motion Below were to start off the night, and as they greeted the crowd and started playing, people inched their way forward towards the front of the stage to get closer to the action. They were a great mix of heavy screaming, with melodic choruses. They were a great starter for the night, getting the crowd all warmed up.
After everyone had a chance to grab some drinks and check out the merch tables and made their way back to the stage, Tapestry (who were also performing at Good Things the following day), got up and started playing – being from Melbourne, it’s no surprise they also got the crowd into it. Definitely a solid up and coming band to keep an eye on.
There was a while to wait for the band of the hour to come on stage, this was a great chance to grab a few more drinks or get their hands on some merch. As it got closer to start time, attendees took their places, cramming as close to the stage as they could get in this packed venue. “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” ringing out aloud over the speakers and as it came to the end of the song, it slowly faded and The Plot In You walked up on stage. They were met with the wooing from the crowd as they broke into the first song of the night, “Divide”. From the get-go, the crowd were screaming the words in unison, arms raised, heads banging. Landon’s vocals and contrasting deep screams were incredible, the energy from Michael on drums to Josh on guitar and Ethan on bass. These guys are so cohesive on stage and remained true to how they sound in the studio. They opened up the stage encouraging crowd surfers, I’m sure security’s worst nightmare, but for the next few songs, people were getting passed along the top of others’ heads and onto the stage and even had Josh from Banks Arcade join them for a song. The setlist was full of all their popular tracks off their albums, both old and new. “THE ONE YOU LOVED” and “Paradigm” being personal favourites of mine. Their newest single “Forgotten” of course was on the setlist and it did not disappoint!
As they played through the set, I looked around at everyone, and they were giving as much passion and energy back to the band as they were being given from them.
The night was about to come to an end, and they slipped off stage, however, the crowd wasn’t having that and were chanting “one more song!” Probably the loudest of any crowd this size that I’ve ever heard. Sure enough, they were granted a final song as they got up on stage again, to perform one last song “FEEL NOTHING” – easily one of their most well-known songs at the moment. Everyone, including myself, was not ready for this night to end. After they handed out drumsticks, picks and the ripped setlists, they said their final goodbyes and jumped off stage.
I had only started listening to this band properly in the last few months and have been hooked since, and I left the venue absolutely blown away by how great these guys were and their live performance had only made me even more of a fan of their music. I was quick to tell those who were going to Good Things to show up early for their set as they are more than worth it! We look forward to their return to Australia, hopefully very soon!
