Periphery are one of a select few rock or metal bands who would dare to bookend their first independent release (2019’s Periphery IV: Hail Stan) with songs that clock in at over 26 minutes, in total. Then again, it’s not like the band is particularly interested in caring about your expectations – the former statement is proof enough that they would likely rather subvert them instead. After all, when you’re a modern progressive metal band that have been nominated for a Grammy Award, inspired countless other bands, and formed your own record label (3DOT Recordings), you can afford to do what you want.
Anyway, Periphery have been hard at work for the aforementioned album’s follow-up, and it appears that record is now done – at least according to vocalist Spencer Sotelo. It also appears that Sotelo is really excited about the upcoming record – but then again, is he going to say he’s dreading its release? Probably not. Regardless, it’s been three years and change since the band’s arguable magnum opus (to date) dropped, so maybe they can outdo Periphery IV. A tall order, to be sure, but we’ll be able to hear it soon. Presumably.
Listening to the final master of P5 right now and I’m really fucking stoked! This one was a long ride and a lot of work, but I don’t think I’ve ever been happier with a piece of music I’ve been a part of.
