Legacy At Heart have chugged along since their debut in the mid 2010’s and have released two acclaimed albums, proving themselves as strong underdogs in the Chicago scene.
Today, we caught up with vocalist Carlos Garay for an interview on the band’s goings-on in 2022:
The New Fury: You’ve come a long way – I remember you uploading full album vocal covers on YouTube more than a decade ago. Your voice sounds as good as ever – how do you maintain it so well?
Carlos Garay: Oh man i forgot about those. It really has been some time hasn’t it? I started making those in high school. I’m still my own worst critic with my voice. I do my best to take care of it. I drink a lot of water and tea. I start my mornings doing vocal warmups. I try to sing as much as I can really! Overtime all that practice has shown some good results.
New Fury: It’s been a while since you’ve taken the stage, when can I catch you guys at a Chicago venue next?!
Carlos: That’s a great question! We love playing shows. Covid has definitely made it challenging the past 3 years. It’s nice to see bands back on tour now. It’s really all about timing and rules venues have. We’d love to play another show soon. When that will be next we aren’t to sure but that door is always opened.
New Fury: There was a gap from 2017-2020 – how much writing/manifesting did you plan for the band between those years?
Carlos: After we released “Faces” we really needed a break from the band and writing. We started writing the 1st record when we were so young. And that process took many years because of how perfect we wanted it to be. We took a couple months just to breathe and enjoy reality. After that we started meeting up late 2018 to start writing. We started with some demos late 2018. Then all of 2019 we spent writing and refining our ideas. We had so many ideas that we had to really decide what songs we wanted to move forward with. It took about 2 years worth of writing and refining the songs we made before making the final decision of what songs we’d move forward with.
New Fury: You’ve had features from Loveless, The Color Morale, Secrets, and more in the past. Who else would you love to hop onto a Legacy At Heart track?
Carlos: The music scene has grown so much over the years. So many new talented voices have entered the scene. It would be awesome to do a feature with Matty Mullins, Kellin Quinn, Oli Sykes, Lynn Gunn or Courtney LaPlante.
New Fury: What’s next in store for Legacy At Heart?
Carlos: Chapter 3 has started! Writing is what’s next. We have already started talks about the process and what direction we want to go with. We are reflecting on LP 1 & 2. We are excited about what’s in store.
