Self-styled emo mathcore band Kaonashi have released an incendiary new video for “Look Like Me”, a revealing look at representation of POC in metal and hardcore – typically considered genres for the outsider regardless of race. The song is lifted from the band’s contribution to Shut it Down: Benefit For The Movement For Black Lives, a compilation that also includes tracks from Misery Signals, Primitive Man, Hive, and many more. Their 2018 EP Why Did You Do It ended up resulting in a record deal with Equal Vision Records, a deserved honor that the band had been working towards for some time.

It should be noted that “Look Like Me” is also cast as a diss at Alternative Press, who reportedly didn’t take the band’s pitch when they wanted to release music, yet decided to include them in an article called “20 black musicians throwing down in metalcore and hardcore”. Bad Rabbits, Cryptodira, and even Volumes vocalist Myke Terry also had the band’s back as well. The publication was also accused of lifting much of the content from a popular Twitter thread about bands that featured black musicians.
LISTEN: @GlassCloud, @Volumesband and @bloodbather are just some of the bands featuring black artists who have helped build and push forward the metalcore and hardcore scenes https://t.co/4721bfaA72
