Interview: Glass Hands

Glass Hands are a post-hardcore/metalcore band hailing from Indianapolis, Indiana. After dropping their debut EP “Exit Letters” back in 2016, the guys in Glass Hands are ready to unleash their debut album “Dive” on June 29th. Recently I had the opportunity to chat with the guys and ask about their influences, plans on touring, and all kinds of fun stuff. Be sure to check them out on Facebook and preorder “Dive” right here!! Don’t sleep on this album because it’s quite fantastic! Fans of A Day to Remember, Issues, or early Bring Me the Horizon will absolutely love “Dive”!!

In terms of the writing process, what was different in terms of writing for a full length as opposed to an EP?

We had never written a full 30+ minute musical work before now. It was unquestionably different in terms of workload; but while we were in the studio working with Bone, things went smoothly. The hardest part was trying to not overthink the little things we like to throw in songs. We found that when we have so much content to put out, we get so engulfed in the process that every little detail means so much more. We tried our best to find a balance between technicality and simplicity.

What were some of your most listened to albums while writing/recording?

The new Wage War album, “Deadweight” was huge for us during the recording process. We were listening to a lot of Dance Gavin Dance, Veil of Maya and Issues during the writing process. Some other artists that we all were constantly listening to were Architects, Neck Deep, Fit For a King, Counterparts, A Day to Remember, and Thy Art Is Murder.

What are some of the lyrical themes or meanings behind some of the songs?

I fit a lot of themes (probably too many) into just 10 songs. Most of the songs have to do with identifying parts of my life that were toxic and finding ways to cut them out. I realized the more I wrote about other people, the more autobiographical the album was becoming. It helped me grow a lot. “Dive” isn’t about not looking back, it’s more-so about the painful process of moving on. There are also some oddball songs like “Part II” which I wrote to thank my mom and “Mirkwood” which is themed around Stranger Things 2.

Who did you work with as a producer? What kind of experience did you have with them?

We worked with Brian “Bone” Thorburn at Threshold Studios in Indianapolis. As always, Bone worked closely with us to help us expand our sound and then some. He works quickly in the studio with the best creative mindset you can get out of a producer in Indy. He also helped us co-write some things on this album. He’s so capable and we’re happy with the quality he brings to our music.

What bands are some of your biggest influences?

Some of our biggest influences in and outside of our genre include Architects, Dance Gavin Dance, A Day to Remember, Wage War, In Her Own Words, Fit For a King and Issues.

If you could tour with any 3 bands, past or present, who would you choose?

It would be a dream come true to tour with Architects, A Day to Remember and Bring Me the Horizon.

Do you have any tour plans to help spread the word about the release?

The Dive Tour starts July 14th! We’re going to be in many cities in and around the midwest. We’ll be in Indiana for a couple shows, Kentucky, New York, Iowa, Michigan and Pennsylvania just to name a few. You can check the full list on our website! GlassHandsIN.com

What’s it been like to be independent and release your own material?

It’s awesome to have full control over our media and presence, but we’ve found that our name shines best when we’re able to collaborate. We love working with others, and with this album we hope to make some more connections and meet some new people that will help us reach our goals.

If you could be signed to any label, which would you hope for?

There are many labels that we love, but finding a label that treats us as an equal priority is in our best interest. Epitaph, Rise, Fearless and Sumerian are just a few that we follow closely.

What albums are you all most looking forward to this year?

A lot of our most anticipated albums have already dropped. Those include albums from Dance Gavin Dance, The Word Alive, Breaking Benjamin, Post Malone, The Wonder Years and some others. We’re excited for new albums from Fit For a King, Trophy Eyes, State Champs and of course Guns N’ Roses’ re-release of Appetite For Destruction. We probably missed a couple but there’s so much music coming out, it’s hard to keep track.

If there was one song you all would love to cover, what would that be?

We’ve been working so hard on the album that we haven’t thought about covers much! We started a cover of “Wait” by Maroon 5 earlier this year but haven’t finished it yet. It would be really fun to cover a new Post Malone song or something from Halsey.

Is there anything you’d like to tell your current or future fan base?

We can’t wait for you to hear this album! We’ve never worked harder on anything as a band and we hope you like it enough to show a friend or two. Thank you to anyone who has ever come to a show or supported us in any way. We appreciate you more than you know. You’re helping us get closer to making this passion a career for us. “Dive” will be available everywhere on June 29th and our release show is July 7th at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis.
