Since the age of 10 Dylan Furr has been shredding his heart out. I had a chance to sit down with this awesome guitarist and ask him a few questions, stay tuned after the jump.
NC: So first off, what got you into playing guitar?
DF: I began guitar at age 10, but didn’t take it seriously until I was about 16. Me & some friends in 6th grade wanted to start a band & I chose to play guitar & write all the music. I studied a bunch of types of playing though, which all stemmed from different influences.
NC: Well, do you have a favorite guitar?
DF: Good question, I have MANY guitars & each serve their purpose, but if I had to choose it’d be my endorsers’ guitars, my Esoterik Eso-C & my Legator N-350-7 string.
NC: In your opinion, who is the best guitarist, alive or dead?
DF: I look up to many guitarists from Holdsworth to David Gilmour to Van Halen. So I’ve gone through many phases of loving different styles. At the moment my favorite guitarist, & the best overall – in my opinion of course, would be Guthrie Govan. He shreds but is melodic when doing so, has jazzy tone & is impeccably clean with great phrasing.
NC: Who would you wanna do a collab with, same rules apply to this question
DF: I would love to collaborate with Tosin Abasi or Joe Satriani. They both have jazz influence in their playing & even some classical (and of course metal).
NC: So why did you name your album “Nostalgia”, any meaning behind it?
DF: Yes. I named my 2nd album Nostalgia because of the plot behind the concept. It’s about a man who goes through life searching for his passion. Along the way he meets a woman that & they fall in love. Shortly after, she is involved in a fatal accident & is killed. No longer being content with his life here alone, he takes his own life to be with her again in the next. In the end, it is revealed that they are 2 ‘old souls,’ which are souls that have lived many times before. They always would fall in love then lose each other soon after meeting. They are to forever chase each other in each new life, never being content for a long period of time before the other is lost.
NC: What kind of bands have inspired you?
DF: Different bands have inspired me at different times but the most consistent ones for my current music would have to be: Opeth, Dream Theater, Katatonia, TesseracT, Periphery, Animals as Leaders, Joe Satriani, Guthrie Govan, Allan Holdsworth, & many more.
NC: What can we expect from you in the future, music related or not.
DF: I am currently working on releasing an old album I made a year ago, it’s short & was just a fun side thing I did. I am also currently working on some new demos/play-thrus for my endorsers! Those are always fun & exciting to make. My newest album is complete in writing, I just need to iron out a few details to make it just that much better, but it will continue on the same path of progression from my previous releases. I look forward to touring this one with my bandmates hopefully this Fall!
