Dangerpin is a Rock/Garage/Punk band based out of my hometown Spring Hill, FL. The band originally formed in 2008 and recently rebirthed. I recently got a chance to talk to David Dahlstrom (Drums) about the reformation and what 2013 holds for the band. DP brings a truly unique style to the table and shows a very promising future.
Please introduce yourself and what you do in Dangerpin?
My name is David Dahlstrom and I play drums in Dangerpin!
How was Dangerpin founded and what are you about?
Dangerpin was started a few years back when my friend Jimmy Barnum (guitarist and vocalist for Ship High In Transit) started writing some other songs outside of that and we started playing them. We are about life experiences and having a good time while playing music. In my opinion that’s what we are about, I am sure everyone would have their own take on it.
I know the band was on hiatus for awhile, why the sudden rebirth?
We have been playing on and off for a while, everyone has just had different things going on and multiple bands. I just really missed playing these songs and with my friends. So I started bugging Jimmy to get it started back up and then it was just a matter of finding members again, not to get too into it, but long story short it ended up being myself, Jimmy and Marc Golas again with the addition of Ship High’s bassist Jamin Travis who was in and out of bands with all of us also.
You guys just recently played your first show in a long time as a DP at Insomniacs, How did that go?
It was a fun night out but unfortunately everything got pushed back really late so we ended up playing extremely late and had a short set, But all in all it was still fun.
Any plans for a new EP or Full Length?
We have technically only released one EP even though we have probably about 15 songs out online in various places. So we will probably be working on new recordings of a few of those, plus some new ones that haven’t been released yet to put out on either another EP or Full Length.
So there has been a lot of show violence and talk that the “Scene” in FL is dead as of late, what is your take on this?
I think it really varies, I have played a lot of shows the last couple of years and while it definitely has gotten more violent in the metal scene (which the majority of bands I do play) there are also the awesome shows where it’s just a great time. It really just seems to depend on the place you are and the crowds bands bring, it seems some of the same bands always have the more aggressive people coming out. I don’t think the scene is dead, but I think everyone needs to just stop having this shitty attitude and just have a good time without purposely starting shit at shows.
Out of all the venues in FL what is your favorite & least favorite to play and why?
Oooooh this is kind of a tricky question, but I would have to say I love playing at Insomniacs even though it isn’t the biggest or best sound. I always have a great time and almost every show I play there or go to there people show up and stick around and it’s never drama filled. Also, Dave (the owner) always tries his best to take care of the bands, local or touring. Oh, but VooDoo up in Port Charlotte would be a close second. My least favorite is a hard decision because I haven’t played at any place I don’t like in a while, but I will have to say Neptunes or Brass Mug for a few different reasons.
What would those reasons be?
It just seems that a lot of bands get screwed at those places and they do not know how to function properly for shows. There is always some sort of issue with the place by the end of the night, not to mention when they treat people attending the show like shit it tends to keep people from showing up for shows at those places (from my experiences at them).
If you could sign DP to any label, who would it be and why?
That’s a tough question since I am always playing in metal bands. All that comes to mind are metal labels (hahaha). I know most of us would prefer to be a DIY band if we could get funding, but if I had to choose I’d go with Fueled By Ramen. They have a good little line up with varying styles of music and some bands we all enjoy.
In closing is there anything you would like to add for the readers?
Just check us out and listen to a few songs, they all vary in styles and if you enjoy it try to come out to one of our shows. Also support whatever local bands you like, it means a lot to them.
