420 BLAZE IT. No but seriously, we’ve put together a handful of albums you should listen to if celebrating 420 is your thing. Or maybe even if not. Enjoy and thank us later. There’s not a ton of analysis here, but do you really need us to go in-depth on these records? Probably not.
Master Of Reality (Black Sabbath)
This Black Sabbath classic OPENS with “Sweet Leaf”. How could you not think this record would be included? Seriously though, Master Of Reality is a metal classic and inspired everything from stoner metal to grunge, even sludge metal bands are indebted to it.
Dopesmoker (Sleep)
Drop out of life with bong in hand, follow the smoke to the Riff Filled Land.
Courage To Grow (Rebelution)
Try having more fun with a reggae rock album.
40 Oz. To Freedom (Sublime)
Fun fact about this Sublime album, it has a song called “Smoke Two Joints”. Wow. Incredible.
Black Sunday (Cypress Hill)
Any of Cypress Hill’s first three records would rightfully be considered hip-hop classics, but we’ll go with 1993’s Black Sunday. If you know, you know.
Dopes To Infinity (Monster Magnet)
Perhaps the closest stoner metal ever got to the mainstream (this happened with their hit “Space Lord”), Monster Magnet’s ’70’s-inspired hard rock grooves proved intriguingly accessible, and most of all – fun.
Dummy (Portishead)
You might say this Portishead album is pretty…trippy.
311 (311)
The album that broke 311 into the mainstream consciousness, its blend of hip-hop, reggae, funk, rock, and metal won the band plenty of fans with massive hits “Down” and “All Mixed Up”. Seriously, there’s a little something for everyone here.
You left out “Spacegrass” by Clutch.
