Hands Like House Make A Comeback Into The Music Scene with Energetic Performance at Melbourne’s Max Watts

By Olivia Burns

Hands Like Houses embarked on their Tropo Tour across Australia, with Melbourne’s Max Watts venue hosting their third stop, with local bands Belle Haven and Bad Juju opening the night.

The crowd had only just started to slowly fill up the room as grunge rock band Bad Juju made their way up on stage. They kicked off the night warming everyone up, even though the room could’ve been more full at this point, that didn’t deter them from putting all of their energy into their performance and gave those that came down early a great show, while those that didn’t come down till later definitely missed out.

Belle Haven was up next, they always put on a great show every time I see them and they definitely didn’t disappoint this time either. They did a great job at encouraging everyone to get closer to the stage and amped up for the night. It’s hard to not to get into them with their stage presence, crowd participation and songs such as ‘Hard Stare, Soft Touch” and “Nobody Likes a Hospital”, these guys are definitely ones to watch in the scene!

With this, I cannot reiterate how important it is to make the effort and show up for opening bands if you can, it’s great to support the local scene and you may discover a new artist or band that you like. I cannot count the times that I’ve gone to a show without knowing the opener and walked away with some new music to enjoy!

It was now time for the main event, as Hands Like Houses got up on stage, greeted by the cheers of the fans that were now squished in as close as they could to the stage. They started off with ‘Heaven’ and ‘24 Hours’, from the start we knew we were in for a great time! As they played through their setlist, blending old favourites with fresh tracks from their latest era, mentioning that they have been continuously releasing new music lately and along with that, a double album is on the near horizon for the band. This is all said prior to mentions from the band that they can’t believe that they’re out here touring again and thanked Josh Raven, former frontman of The Faim, who made his debut with Hands Like Houses on this tour and who came to the band at a pivotal time in their lives. Watching from the crowd, he has seamlessly integrated into the group. The chemistry between him and the original members was palpable, showcasing his powerful vocals and the band’s collective energy.

During a quick bathroom break for the drummer, the band clutched at straws trying to find a way to keep the crowd entertained, whilst failing to come up with any jokes, the crowd took the opportunity to rally for a shoey. After getting thrown a shoe from fellow The Faim band mate, Josh took one for the team, reluctantly downing the beer out of the shoe, proving that not even Australian bands can get away from the shoey traditions while on tour in this country.

As they played through their setlist the crowd got even more energetic, jumping up and down, screaming the lyrics along with them. Belle Haven’s singer even joined them up on stage, before Josh got down into the middle of the mosh.

It was nearing the end as the group then brought shots onto the stage and raised them together in a toast to commemorate the night, before closing with ‘Paradise’.

Overall, Hands Like Houses’ new chapter appears very promising, marked by a night of electrifying performance and a fresh energy. We eagerly await to hear that new album and see them take on the music scene again!
