It probably seemed like a good idea when the folks at Steel City Harley planned the “Star Spangled Shindig” for the afternoon of July 6, 2024. Sure, it will be a little hot, but, with a start time of 11 AM and only going until 3, it can’t be that bad.
It was that bad.
The small town of Washington, Pennsylvania, was in the middle of a string of 8 or 10 days in a row, of above average temperatures. It was already 85 degrees when the event started at 11 AM, and the parking lot turned concert venue was pure asphalt. Yet, the cars were already into the overflow parking when the first note was played and by the time headliner Jasmine Cain was ready to play at 1:15, there were very few places to stand to watch the show.
As she played the opening notes of her set, Jasmine Cain had the audience’s attention. Clad in her signature leather and fishnets, she exuded rock ‘n’ roll charisma and attitude. It is easy to see why she is one of the most compelling acts in the modern rock scene.’
Taking the time to talk to the audience, and telling the anecdotes that led to how the next song came about, she encouraged everyone to join in and let loose. The energy, even in an 85 degree parking lot, was electric, with fans dancing along to the beat. It was most interesting to watch her express her gratitude for their support. Her genuine and down-to-earth demeanor endeared her to the audience, creating a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect.
Hailing from the bike week famous Sturges, South Dakota, Cain explained how she started playing with bands in venues before she was legally old enough to be in the venue, to being one of the hardest working females in the music industry without a doubt. She and her band play over a hundred dates a year, mostly all of the major motorcycle events and rallies throughout the United States and Canada, including Sturgis and Daytona and just like today, many corporate Harley Davidson sponsored events.
By the time Cain left the stage, and headed for her merch table to meet everyone, the concert was a reminder of the enduring power of live music and the unique magic that occurs when an artist and their audience come together in a shared experience. The audience was soaked in sweat, but it had to be nothing compared to the leather outfit Cain had on. And that, as they say, is rock and roll, and Jasmine Cain left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to attend her show at Steel City Harley.
