It’s clear by now that today’s indie rock and indie punk listeners love a bit of twang in their records every now and then. If you’ve gotten into Rat Saw God by Wednesday or Infinite Spring by Superviolet (the new project of The Sidekicks’ Steve Ciolek) this year, or a unique marriage of bluegrass-meets-emo sounds intriguing, you should have Milk St. on your radar in 2023. Fans of The Front Bottoms and Alex G should take note of this group from Bangor, Maine as well.
While their prior single “China Town” was a coming-of-age story told in the form of a psychedelic drug trip, their newest track “Peyote” sees the band reflecting on the complex family dynamics that shape us. Vocalist Jonah Wakefield says, “Peyote is about realizing your parents aren’t always right and that any new perspectives you take on may be influenced by the mental illness passed down hereditarily to you. Ultimately, you’re left feeling horrified that you can’t escape the thing that influences their different opinions and outlooks, to the point where you accidentally seek those traits in the people you date – you’re left stuck in this cycle of having the same sort of people in your life over and over.”
“China Town” and “Peyote” will both appear on the upcoming Milk St. EP Vermont that is due for release this fall. Both these songs are out now on all platforms and can be heard live for the next couple weeks as the group continue their summer tour!
