Fueled by Ramen has always presented unique alternative rock bands. Paramore and Panic! At The Disco are just a few examples. Their newest project, Young the Giant, is no exception! Young the Giant has released their debut album, Mind Over Matter a couple weeks ago and has received a lot of attention and I’m going to explain why.

Young the Giant has a very stand alone sound, comparably different from Panic! or Paramore. While they are labeled as Alternative Rock, many of the tracks off the album aren’t necessarily labeled by a specific genre. This is what makes the album so unique. Not only does it sound different, but it also gives off a different atmosphere. You can tell these guys put a lot of emotion and passion into their songs. Here’s a couple of examples…

One of my favorite songs off the album their title track, Mind Over Matter. The main thing that caught my interest was the intro. The intro gives off an early 70’s disco vibe, which kind of goes along with the theme of the song. Now a song can be interpreted in a number of ways depending on the listener. What I gathered from it, it’s about individual hardship. It’s not for anything specific, but it covers the generic hardships that we have day to day. The lyrics in the chorus

“If the world don’t break, I’ll be shaking it cause I’m a young man after all”

was something that I could connect with. As a young adult, there are trials we go through and we have to brush off any negativity and go forward. It’s hard to write a song that people can connect with and Young the Giant
was able to do this many of their songs.

Creating music is beautiful as it is productive. It’s not everyday that a band or artist shows how grateful they are to be in the line of work they are in. Their song In My Home does exactly this. It’s one of their more upbeat songs, but they clearly describe what it’s like to perform and tour, from waking up in their van/ bus to the sunrise to seeing

the teens on their telephones

while they perform. They show that they love doing what they do and were so appreciative, they incorporated that emotion into this song! This is a concept that I feel bands should consider doing more often.

Overall, this album is incredible! While it shows creativity and sounds completely different than what you would expect, it may take a couple listens to certain tracks before you take a liking to them. Fueled by Ramen has yet to disappoint me and Young the Giant is a fantastic addition to their roster. While they are still new to the music industry, they show a lot of potential and I can’t wait to hear more of them! You can purchase their new album Mind Over Matter on iTunes and at select retailers… Go purchase it today!
