Original Story Of The Year guitarist Greg Haupt, who left the band just prior to the release of their debut album Page Avenue, has passed away. The band posted a tribute to Haupt on their socials earlier today.
Haupt was originally diagnosed with cancer in March 2020. At the time of his departure prior to the release of Page Avenue, Haupt had already tracked what would become three of the band’s biggest songs – “Anthem of Our Dying Day”, “Until the Day I Die”, and “Razorblades”. There’s also a GoFundMe attached as well.
This was taken in 2002, shortly before we moved to California and recorded Page Ave. Longtime fans might remember our original rhythm guitar player, Greg Haupt. After a long and brave battle with cancer, Greg left us last night. In those early days Greg played a significant part in helping “Big Blue Monkey” become SOTY. Together we toured the country in a van, moved to California, signed a record deal, and worked on songs that would wind up on Page Ave. He was a bigger than life personality with an incredible sense of humor. He was also a very talented musician and songwriter. Greg leaves behind 3 beautiful kids and a loving wife, and we’re going to miss him dearly. If there is an afterlife, Greg is there, tall as fuck, guitar in hand, making everyone laugh. Love you, dude.
