The title of this article isn’t wrong. I’m not really sure if I enough adjectives or superlatives to pin down exactly who So Hideous are, the music they’re creating, or what they’re trying to do, but I do know it is fucking fantastic. The band expertly merges elements of black metal, screamo, post-hardcore, post-rock, post-metal, and classical music to create something truly unique and expansive. And unlike some bands out there who aim high but unfortunately fail to provide a true experience, So Hideous delivers exactly that – an experience of cinematic proportions. As someone who was sadly unfamiliar with the band (despite a few highly regarded releases that I unfortunately did not check out, Laurestine is an album that fans of bands like Envy, Deafheaven, Mono, and Suis La Lune will want to check out like…right now.
Check out the song “Yesteryear” for a good idea of what you’re going to get with the album, or better yet, buy the whole thing. It’s already secured a place among the best albums I’ve heard all year, and continues to get better with each listen.
