If you can believe it, there was a time very recently where Bad Omens were headlining much smaller venues than they do currently. In fact, it was just before Covid-19 where Bad Omens were preparing for the biggest headlining tour of their career to date. That was, of course, at the beginning of 2020 – where they had also just released a deluxe edition of their album Finding God Before God Finds Me. Featuring a cover of Duran Duran’s “Come Undone” and a few other new songs, it was the deluxe edition of their breakout album, released on August 2nd, 2019.
The album’s success was a harbinger of things to come, of course. Taking the criticism of their self-titled debut and running into intriguing new songwriting directions, the band improved across the board – and particularly vocalist Noah Sebastian, who improved by leaps and bounds. A tall order considering how skilled a vocalist he proved to be from day one. Sebastian’s performances are electrifying and certainly have star qualities. It’s hard not to listen to songs like choice cut anthem “Careful What You Wish For” and the poppier “Burning Out” to understand the crossover appeal they currently have.
With a full album and a valuable couple years of experience under their belt, it’s not hard to see why this record was a sign of things to come. While there’s plenty of customary heavy songs like “Dethrone”, an increased focus on melodies and atmosphere is a big reason why this Bad Omens record made it increasingly difficult to pigeonhole them as some BMTH copycats. Nothing could be further from the truth.
