Few bands playing heavy music now deliver songs with the kind of conviction that Silent Planet has. In fact, they’ve proven this over five full-length albums, and while their sound does evolve from album to album, one of the biggest constants is lyrics that tell stories and bring to light important topics that aren’t covered too often.
Everything Was Sound was released on July 1st, 2016, and serves as the metalcore band’s sophomore album. Unlike many bands in the genre, most songs on the record don’t follow a verse-chorus-verse structure. In fact, many tracks on the record echo the lyrical matter at hand in surprising ways.
Silent Planet are particularly skilled at composing songs that talk about matters of the interpersonal, but also matters of the soul, heart, and world. “Understanding Love As Loss” will immediately hit home for anyone who’s ever struggled with suicidal thoughts or depression, while the poignant lyrics of “No Place To Breathe” tackle racial inequality and fascism in ways that feel particularly important with each passing day.
A sizeable chunk of Silent Planet’s appeal comes from the fact that they play with the conventions of metalcore like they’re play toys. While many bands of the genre choose to play it a little bit safer, that’s never been Silent Planet’s game. After all, how many other bands are brave enough to tackle a subject like soldiers coming back from war who have PTSD? And how many are bold enough to do so with a song structure that’s anything but typical? Not many.
