Twin Temple bring an evening of satanic doo-wop to Chicago

By Colette Custin & Chris Bevard

L.A. doo-wop Satanists Twin Temple played to a rowdy house at Metro this week, showcasing their unique blend of classic rock n’ roll, doo-wop, and…black magic? How many bands actually start their show with a short-and-sweet black mass, hailing Satan in matching pink?

That’s just part of what makes (vocalist) Alexandra and (guitarist) Zachary James so special since coming onto the national scene in 2019 with their debut album, and now, touring on 2023’s God is Dead, the band has attracted death threats, Bible thumpers, and all sorts of protesters at recent shows. And, from James’ perspective, that’s just fine.

“They were praying outside the other night for people to not have a good time at our show,” she grinned. “So if Jesus doesn’t want us to have a good time at concerts…then Satan must want us to have a really good time at concerts!” The crowd responded joyfully, singing every word to new songs “Burn Your Bible” and “Be a Slut.”

An instrumental cover of Link Wray’s “Rumble” was a fun addition to the set, as was a cover of the theme from “The Munsters,” and throughout the night, James gave numerous shout-outs to individualism and strong women everywhere, much to the crowd’s delight. Twin Temple’s image is fun, shocking, and, in many ways, refreshing— there’s no one else doing what they do, which made the night feel that much more special.

Openers VOWW delivered a solid forty-minute set of synth-driven goth pop with a hooky edge.
