There’s nothing quite like reminiscing about the bands and musicians you grew up listening to, rediscovering them, and finding out they still make good music. I’d have to include Soil in this category. Their early 2000’s output was certainly solid, and it’s tracks like “Redefine” that influenced me a lot growing up.

The band is still making meaningful music, as signaled by their most recent release on Pavement Entertainment, Whole, and a heavy touring schedule worldwide. Bassist Tim King stopped by to give us a list of 5 albums that have had a big influence on his life. Check them out after the jump.

1. Mötley Crüe – Shout At The Devil

This is the album that got me into metal. It was the first actual album I bought. It was one of those albums that you had to hide from your parents. The crazy thing was that back in those days no one could understand the words. So when the song “bastard” came in me and my friends all thought our parents would freak out but they didn’t know what was going on. Hahaha. Crazy to think compared to vocals and screams of today’s music. This album still is my favorite album of all time and motley Crüe is still my favorite band of all time.

2. Obituary – Cause Of Death

This is the album that got me into death metal. I was at a friend’s house and he was like “listen to this”. It sounded like vocalist John Tardy was gargling glass. It was just so heavy and like nothing I had ever heard. I wasn’t a huge fan of thrash, but once I heard obituary, Napalm death, morbid angel, and cannibal corpse, I was hooked. The “cause of death” album is just so dark and heavy it is like listening to a horror movie soundtrack. Such an epic album and the guitar work by James Murphy (whom I proud to call a friend) is in a league of its own. It’s was this album that got me into death metal and led me to form my first successful band Oppressor.

3. Corrosion Of Conformity – Wiseblood

This album actually inspired us to form SOiL. We were getting burnt out playing death metal and we wanted to “get back to our roots” and just have some fun writing rock songs. This album really gave us a lot of the early inspiration for SOiL. Still such an amazing and well crafted album. The “wise blood” line up has reformed from what I hear. Hey Pepper, if you read this, let’s do some touring together!!

4. Nickelback – All The Right Reasons

This album hands down has a Perfect production. Ever since it came out I use this album as a template for tones and mixes on everything I’m involved in. We used this as a comparison for the SOiL “Whole” album. “All the right reasons” is hands down the best sounding rock record I’ve ever heard tone and production wise. At least for now…

5. Metallica – Master Of Puppets

Got me into heavier music. Such a Game changing album. I was in junior high when this came out. Me and all my friends worshipped this album. It was like nothing we had ever heard before. Such a ground breaking and original album that changed the way I listened to music and set the bar higher for everything I listened to after it.
