Texas alternative rock/pop-punk newcomers Rain Check play a hybrid style of music that is both easily accessible and that still contains enough “punch” to appeal to a wide variety of people. Their new EP Things Change is quite honestly one of the best unsigned EP’s I’ve heard all year long, especially in this genre. If you’re into Movements, older Citizen, and older Balance and Composure, you are sure to love this band.
We teamed up with the band to present our popular segment “5 Albums That Changed My Life”, except in this case it’s an album selected by each member of the band. Check it out below, as it gives a good barometer to some of Rain Check’s key influences. You can also stream their new EP, Things Change, below.
Tyler: Put Yourself Back Together – Real Friends
“This record was something I listened to when I was deployed and helped me through a break up. Not to mention it has been a big influence on how I write lyrics.”
Neil: The Things We Think We’re Missing – Balance & Composure
“It’s just a record that means a lot to me and it got me through a tough time in my life.”
Jesse: Ocean Avenue – Yellowcard
“That album combined two things that I was getting into at the time, violin and alternative/pop punk music. Hearing those 2 elements blew my mind. Also the lyrics on that record connected with things I was going through in my life.”
Tim: Abandoned – Defeater
“I love every song on this record. Defeater in general has shaped the way I write songs and this album was the first of theirs that I listened to front to back. Lyrically it hits me hard and the songs are heavy but also so musical.”
Drew: Letters Home – Defeater
“This is really the first record that got me in to darker sounding music. Just an all around great record.”
