Right alongside bands like Kingmaker, Rooks, and a host of other bands in the Midwest, Sworn In and Barrier rank as some of the more important bands to emerge from the Chicago (and surrounding) areas in the early part of the 2010’s. They helped to pioneer a low, heavy, and angry metalcore/downtempo sound that many a band would attempt (and fail miserably) to copy in their wake. While both of these bands (especially Sworn In) have gone on to notable success outside of their regional scene, it’s clear that there is plenty of love for both bands’ older material.
Considering Fearless Records just releases a remastered version of their Start/End EP, it seemed the perfect time for Sworn In and Barrier to play all their older material, which happened just a few short days ago in Wisconsin. To nobody’s surprise, it sold out quickly, and now you can view full sets from both bands below
After a few days of speculation that Grayslake, Illinois band Sworn In might be breaking up, it turns out that’s definitely not the case. Instead, the band will be performing at least one show where they’ll be playing the Start/End EP in full, as well as their standout track “Let Down”. Joining them will be fellow heavyweights Barrier, where they’ll be playing material from their first EP, as well as venerated EP Dark Days. It appears to be a one time only show, but that’s uncertain. Still, this is a treat for longtime fans who may have seen both bands grow in the local scene.
As someone who’s seen them evolve musically nearly since their inception, Grayslake, IL metalcore band Sworn In have undergone an interesting progression in sound. Their EP Start/End remains an influential piece of music to be certain, but new album All Smiles (the band’s first for Fearless Records) is also a solid listen. A fair way to describe it might be “emotional metalcore”, which isn’t really far off.
Many fans just can’t seem to let go of the band’s Start/End and/or The Death Card eras, though. But why is that? Drummer Chris George goes relatively in-depth about Sworn In’s evolution, All Smiles, and…Anti-Flag? Indeed. Check out the whole interview below.
Warped Tour season is upon us, and that means your social media feeds are likely filled with “wow this band KILLED it at Warped Tour this year” statuses, people who think they’ve earned cool points for not attending Warped Tour, and/or 50 of your friends who are also photographing the festival. If you haven’t seen all 3 of these, I’ll be shocked.
Anyhow, while it’s often disappointing that most bands only get to play between 6-9 songs every day, the fact is that it takes an incredible amount of effort for the dozens of bands to play every day and even travel, set up, take down, and do it all over again. Many fans want to know if band ________ is playing song ________, so here’s setlists from Sylar, Sworn In, Creeper, and many more. Thanks to Amped Sound for posting these – go like their FB page as well!
