Interview: “Grog” Of Die So Fluid

DSF

We recently reached out to the English hard rock group Die So Fluid, and we were lucky enough to talk with their bassist/vocalist, “Grog”. We talked about touring, horror films and more. Die So Fluid released their full length, “The Opposites Of Light” back on May 5th, 2014, you can check it out now.

Q – Die So Fluid have recently started up your tour supporting Eyes Set To Kill and Wednesday 13. How has the tour been treating you so far, and how have the crowds been?

Grog – Really awesome, it’s such a great opportunity for us to get out and play. We’re so excited because the reception everywhere has been great. It’s special to me personally as I’ve now relocated to LA from London. The scene feels really vibrant.

Q – You released “The Opposites Of Light” back in May last year, how has the reception for it been like so far?

Grog – Yes, and this tour is part of the official US campaign promoting the album. The reception has been amazing, both with the fans and press. We’re independent and I’d really like the added push of a label now that the word is spreading.

Q – We heard that you had moved to the US prior to making the album. Did that affect the writing process in any way, being away from the rest of the band at times?

Grog – We were a little worried that a change in the writing process would be problematic but it flowed smoothly, exchanging ideas and parts via the internet and it had added benefits. I improved on my own home recording process and was able to be more of a perfectionist with vocal performances due to not having the time constraints of block booking a studio.

Q – You released a music video for “Nightmares” back on Halloween, can you tell us a little about the concept behind the video?

Grog – We’ve made several videos for this album and with “Nightmares” we decided to use footage from one of my favorite old horror films, ‘Carnival Of Souls’. We did some performance video in an eerie East London warehouse that since burnt down, and it all seemed to combine perfectly to fit the song, which deals with exorcising an evil influence in your life.

Q – You teamed up with bloodydisgusting.com to release the video, how did that all come about?

Grog – They are so cool and have been very supportive of Die So Fluid, and previously premiered another one of our videos, “Landslides”. I think they appreciate the horror film inspiration we often draw upon.

Q – Who initially brought in the idea to team up for a release?

Grog – We have an awesome guy Tom, who is our publicist, and he suggested it. He knows his stuff!

Q – Your debut album “Spawn Of Dysfunction” recently turned ten years old this past November. How do you think the album still holds up with the rest of your discography?

Grog – It’s strong. We may be better writers and musicians now, but it shows the raw essence and spark of what was to follow, and captures the favor of the time. That gives it an exciting ugency.

Q – Did it ever cross your mind that, “wow, it really has been a decade since then.” ?

Grog – Always-haha. But time flies when you’re rocking hard and having fun.

Q – Hard rock/heavy metal and horror films have always gone easily hand in hand, what are some of your personal favorites?

Grog – We’ve been watching all the ‘Final Destination’ films on the tour bus, haha, they’re a lot of fun. My personal faves tho are classics like ‘The Shining’, ‘Amityville’, ‘Wickerman’, ‘Hellraiser’… Plus I’m a Rob Zombie fan and I love 70’s style flicks like ‘Hammer House Of Horror’.

Q – What’s the best concert you’ve ever attended that you did not play?

Grog – I saw Mastodon, Deftones and Alice In Chains at the Gibson in LA. Phenomenal.

Q – What are some of your favorite music releases from 2014?

Grog – Death Penalty, Crosses, and Mastodon’s ‘Once More Round The Sun’.

Q – Moving forward, what’s next for Die So Fluid after the Eyes Set To Kill tour finishes up?

Grog – We’re doing a west coast tour with The Dreaming and intend to focus on rocking here in the US for most of this year!
