The Namib Desert in Africa is one of the driest places in the world, with only the Atacama Desert of South America rivaling it in terms of a complete lack of rain. You could say it’s pretty hot in the Namib, and things just got a bit more heated with the knowledge that “Africa”, the 1982 hit from soft rock band Toto, is being played on an infinite loop in the desert. The location in the desert is unknown and hasn’t been revealed, and six speakers have been attached to an MP3 player.
Speaking to CNet.com about the construction, Namibian artist Max Siedentopf had this to say:
“Some [Namibians] love it and some say it’s probably the worst sound installation ever. I think that’s a great compliment.”
The song is being played with solar batteries at the installation, meaning that unless some strange climate shift changes the fabric of Earth (and/or Africa), the song will play forever. You can view a video of “Africa” being played on an endless loop below.
