ZZ Top founding bassist Dusty Hill passes away at the age of 72

Longtime bassist and founding member of the legendary blues rock band ZZ Top, Dusty Hill, has passed away at the age of 72. Hill, who joined the band in 1970, was part of one of blues rock’s biggest power trios – the trio played together for over 50 years.

“We are saddened by the news today that our Compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, TX. We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top’. We will forever be connected to that ‘Blues Shuffle in C.’ You will be missed greatly, amigo.”

A founding member of the band, Hill and ZZ Top went on to sell over 50 million albums worldwide – and reinvented themselves for a new generation in the ’80s with the use of synthesizers.
