Wrestlemania 17

Houston, Texas

April 1st, 2001

WWF Intercontinental Title Match
Chris Jericho (c) vs. William Regal

A decent opener that didn’t get a lot of time. They had some good in ring psychology going though even if the end was lackluster.

2.5 / 5

Six Man Tag Team Match
Tazz & The APA (Bradshaw & Faarooq) (w/Jacqueline) vs. The Right To Censor (Bull Buchanan, The Goodfather & Val Venis) (w/Steven Richards)

A quick match that wasn’t anything special but the crowd popped for.

1 / 5

WWF Hardcore Title Triple Threat Match
Raven (c) vs. Kane vs. The Big Show

A solid hardcore match that didn’t go too long but still dragged in bits. Had to be awful to watch live in person because they just wandered backstage most of it. It had its moments though.

2 / 5

WWF European Title Match
Test (c) vs. Eddie Guerrero (w/Perry Saturn)

Test wasn’t great in ring but Eddie held it together here. It had its moments but would have been better to see Eddie vs someone a bit more experienced in ring here.

2 / 5

Singles Match
Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit

Outside of the ref bump this was a legit wrestling match. It had story in it and kept you interesting and the crowd was behind it. They had believable counters and close moments here and this was one of their best matches.

4 / 5

WWF World Women’s Title Match
Ivory (c) vs. Chyna

A 2 minute squash really. This was on Chynas way out of the company.

.5 / 5

Street Fight (Special Referee: Mick Foley)
Shane McMahon vs. Vince McMahon (w/Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley)

Less of a match and more of a spectacle with fighting. This match had the crowd going and a story behind it. Shane got his spots in, Linda had the crowd going, Trish got pops, Foley got pops, and this ended a big story.

3.5 / 5

WWF World Tag Team Title Tables, Ladders & Chairs Three Way Match
The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray Dudley & D-Von Dudley) (c) vs. Christian & Edge vs. The Hardy Boyz (Jeff Hardy & Matt Hardy)

A 5 star match again. Just like the first this was a perfect mash of chaos, big spots, close falls, and everything you’d want. This is a masterclass of 3 teams working so well together and having such great in ring chemistry. The run ins here worked great as well providing huge moments and getting massive pops.

5 / 5

Gimmick Battle Royal
Bushwhacker Luke vs. Earthquake vs. Duke Droese vs. The Gobbledy Gooker vs. The Goon vs. The One Man Gang vs. Kamala (w/Harvey Wippleman) vs. Sgt. Slaughter vs. Doink vs. Michael Hayes vs. James E. Cornette vs. The Iron Sheik vs. Kim Chee vs. Tugboat vs. Bushwhacker Butch vs. Repo Man vs. Nikolai Volkoff vs. Hillbilly Jim vs. Brother Love

All these legends and the match lasted almost as long as all entrances. A comedy match just to get a pop from all the old names.

.5 / 5

Singles Match
Triple H vs. The Undertaker

A fun brawl if you look past the comically long ref bump. A lot of big spots and moments here by both guys. The streak was starting to be a big deal and HHH got the close fall moments here to make it seem like there was a chance.

4 / 5

WWF World Heavyweight Title No Disqualification Match
The Rock (c) vs. Steve Austin

Possibly the best Wrestlemania main event ever. A 30 minute match that never lagged even once and kept a nonstop pace throughout. Both guys proved here why they were legends and why they had some of the best chemistry of the era. The turn at the end caused a huge reaction too to close the show.
