The 2024 Windy City Smokeout is just another happy memory! Tens of thousands of Country Music fans traveled to what is considered by some as the best festival of its kind in the Midwest!
While few might consider Chicago as a Mecca for the genre, this annual event which was founded eleven years ago brings together rising musical talent, as well as top name acts to its single stage. A huge draw is the food and numerous barbeque vendors from across the country offering ribs, pull pork sandwiches and smoked brisket. I’ve learned from years past the best menu selections tend to sell out rather early each day so food sampling is a high priority early in the day. Then there are your favorite beverages to wash it all down with!
Windy City Smokeout takes place in the parking lot just north of the United Center, home of the Bulls, Blackhawks and the venue for the Democratic National Convention next month. Chicago’s hot summer temperatures and threat of storms did not deter fans from attending, many arriving early to avoid lines at the food vendors or secure prime stage viewing on the rail for their favorite artists. The festival was evacuated as a precaution on Friday as severe weather approached, but dissipated before reaching the city and everyone was permitted to return.
This years top talent included Thomas Rhett, Lee Brice, Parker McCollum, Cody Johnson, Billy Currington, and Carrie Underwood who closed out the festival on Sunday evening.
Notable performances included Alana Springsteen warmed up the crowd early on Thursday afternoon. Things got really hot when Priscilla Block took to the stage and really got the crowd in the mood. Cody Johnson took time out to note the work our first responders do to keep us safe. While not on prominent display, security was enhanced at this year’s event. Carrie Underwood closed out the festival on Sunday, and despite the extremely hot and humid conditions, her performance was outstanding!
There are many festival in the city each summer, big and small, ranging from Lollapalooza to local street fests, but none quite like this one. Those fans that traveled to be here, can begin planning for next year, those of us that live nearby will pack the cowboy boots and hats away until next July!
