WCW Thunder – Episode 1 (01.08.1998) (Wrestling Review)

WCW

Thunder

Daytona Beach, Florida

Jan. 8th, 1998

Singles Match
Chris Adams vs. Randy Savage (w/Miss Elizabeth)

Not the ending you’d expect given Savage was a big name but they did tie it into a story.

1 / 5

Singles Match
Louie Spicolli vs. Rick Martel

Crowd was a bit into Martel here. Quick and nothing special but also wasn’t unwatchable.

1.5 / 5

Singles Match
Tenzan vs. Ohara (w/Sonny Onoo)

A few cool moves here but mostly just punches thrown before a finisher making this not even a 3 minute match.

1 / 5

Singles Match
Chris Jericho vs. Ric Flair

A fine match here between two greats. Horrible ending and commentary was awful but the match itself was quick and fine.

2.5 / 5

Singles Match
Meng (w/Jimmy Hart) vs. The Giant

 Pretty much a boring squash.

.5 / 5

Singles Match
Bill Goldberg vs. Steve McMichael

Mongo got a little offense in before this turned into typical Goldberg squash.

.5 / 5

WCW World Tag Team Title Match
The Steiner Brothers (Rick Steiner & Scott Steiner) (w/Ted DiBiase) (c) vs. Buff Bagwell & Konnan (w/Vincent)

Another short match here that just wasn’t great. Steiners looked good though.

1.5 / 5

Control For Monday NITRO Match (Special Referee: Bret Hart)
Larry Zbyszko vs. Eric Bischoff (w/Scott Hall)

This match had no redeeming moments. It was an awful gimmick match with a stipulation that meant nothing. It gets the lowest rating I’ve ever given a match as of writing this. The funniest part is reshowing this entire match during Thunders premiere where its over double in length to any match thus far.

0.1 / 5

Singles Match
Ray Traylor vs. Scott Hall

This went a few minutes but really nothing happened. Then we run a distraction finish which was already used in another match tonight anyway.

.5 / 5

WCW World Cruiserweight Title Match
Ultimo Dragon (c) vs. Juventud Guerrera

3 minutes for a title match where commentary talked about the NWO for over half the match anyway. Match itself was fine but with that little time they couldn’t do much let alone match a good title change match.

1.5 / 5

Singles Match
Lex Luger vs. Scott Norton

They made a big deal of Luger kicking out of Nortons finisher here but this was a 2 minute match where very little happened. Add in another post match attack by guys from earlier.

.5 / 5

WCW United States Heavyweight Title Match
Diamond Dallas Page (c) vs. Kevin Nash (w/Hollywood Hogan)

DQ finish but at least we got 6 minutes of this slow sluggish match. Another post match run in as well which gets cut due to Thunder running over their TV time slot.

.5 / 5
