While there are a ton of albums coming out in 2014, Volumes has one of the most highly anticipated to release this year in the metalcore scene. After several delays, you can expect the album to be out this summer, and there’s a new single out now. If anyone was underwhelmed from their first single titled “The Mixture”, this single will give you hope for their new album. Check out their new single and my thoughts after the jump.

While many enjoyed “The Mixture” its catchy-ness and groove, it was also met with criticisms of Volumes not stepping up to the plate completely. I personally liked the song, even with that complaint and the lyrics being a little iffy. While I enjoyed that song, it did not impress me as much as their new single “Erased”.

On my first listen I immediately fell in love with the cleans, and I’m sure most people did too when they first listened to it. They had a preview of this song in the album teaser video and I first took a note of it then, and I’m happy I get to hear the song in full today. With that being said, this song did a great job of balancing the cleans with the screams throughout the song. I’m not a fan of screams and clean vocals layered together in most songs, but it is done perfectly in this song. Overall, this song does a great job of being heavy but filled with emotion and meaning. The lyric “I thought you’d hate me” stuck with me after listening to it several times, and it’s a simple very simple line but it definitely hits home.

Apart from the vocals, the instrumentation and structure of the song is what makes this song so great. A lot of metal bands try and fail at making soft parts in their songs instrumentally, and vocally for that matter, and the transitions from soft to heavy don’t seem to fit. However, Volumes does this transition perfectly. The changes from soft to heavy verses in this song work really well, and the song flows seamlessly unlike other bands that try to do this.

This single is the side of Volumes that made me fall in love with them. While I love their heavier songs like “Paid In Full” and “Behind the Curtain”, the Volumes songs that stick out to me the most are “Wormholes” and “Edge of the Earth”. Now, I can add “Erased” to that list.

Check out their new song here, and pre-orders for their second album titled No Sleep can be found here. You can also check out their first single “The Mixture” and their pre-production song “Vahle”No Sleep comes out July 15th through Mediaskare Records.
