If you want to talk about a metal band that’s been through the ringer in the last ten years or so, Los Angeles’s Volumes certainly qualifies. Sweeping member changes and stylistic changes as well have seen the band continue to weather the storms of life with their new material. Releasing a string of singles in the last year+ as Michael Barr rejoined the band, his synergy with Myke Terry has seen Volumes evolve into something that will please older fans of the band, as well as bringing in new ones.
Newest single “Happier?” also fits that bill, as the title track from their upcoming album (out in November via Fearless Records) combines the bright melodies and progressive metalcore guitar crunch of their early material with the band’s recent penchant for huge hooks. It all works out in the end, as Volumes intentionally title this song in the form of a question.
About the new song, Volumes had this to say:
“‘Happier?’ is about how you watch someone destroy themselves and ultimately end up in a darker, negative space and feeling like your hands are tied. It’s about feeling helpless to the fact that you once knew someone completely different then the person who is standing in front of you.”
