Underoath’s new video for “We’re All Gonna Die” reminds us all about the power of live music

Remember when Underoath took advantage of their spare time during the initial waves of COVID-19 to release their three Observatory livestream series? Financially, they were extremely successful, and critically, they raised the metalcore band’s profile, though you’d wonder how it’s possible for Underoath to get any bigger.

If you also missed their Digital Ghost event from late last year, where the band played through their entire Voyeurist album a month before its release, you really did miss a treat. Both its cinematic concert event as well as the headlining tour the band just finished up were equally as compelling. We happened to be at one of the Southern California events of the tour, and honestly Underoath has never looked more focused or motivated.

The band’s new video for “We’re All Gonna Die”, from their Digital Ghost concert event, exhibits that quite well. If you missed it, just know this – live music is integral to the band’s output. After all, Underoath is a band that’s been around for 20+ years, but if Voyeurist is anything to go by, they’ll be around much longer than that. Seriously, have you seen the production values on this thing? It’s so impressive, it really does have the cinematic feel to it.

While obviously live music is (mostly) making a comeback despite the continued pandemic, there is very much a place for livestreams with a purpose behind them. Even a live acoustic session for smaller bands can absolutely work in their favor if there’s enough fan demand for it. It’s not just bands the size of Underoath that can rake in the money. If you have something like 200 paying customers for around $10/each for a live acoustic session or something else, maybe where the fans get to choose certain songs, you can easily bring in a couple grand to go around. This is, of course, a more minimalistic take on things – but works just the same with enough interest.
