This Day In Music History: October 24th, 2000 – Linkin Park releases debut full-length album, ‘Hybrid Theory’

Needing little introduction, Hybrid Theory, the debut album from multi-platinum selling rock band Linkin Park, was released on October 24th, 2000. Buoyed by strong songwriting and undeniable chemistry between vocalists Mike Shinoda and the late Chester Bennington, tracks like “In The End” and the underrated “Papercut” became MTV staples as well as massive radio hits, providing real catharsis for a generation of teenagers and young adults. Lead single “One Step Closer” was the catalyst for the band’s massive hype and subsequent success, as well.

It’s important to remember that the band was passed over by every record label under the sun initially. That simply didn’t matter to Linkin Park, though, as their strong collection of songs were released at the perfect time. How many bands can claim their debut record went Diamond? Not very many.

An adept blend of rock, hip-hop, and electronic vibes, the album was refreshingly honest and candid about mental health at a time where that wasn’t in vogue. It helps writing songs that stand the test of time, sure – and Hybrid Theory is no doubt a template that many rock bands who followed sought to emulate. It is, of course, one of the highest-selling albums in history.

The album, which was certified 12 times Platinum recently, was also recently released in a 20th anniversary special edition box set filled with rare demos from the band’s earliest days.

After selling 45k copies its first week of release, Hybrid Theory caught fire. It went Gold by the end of the year, and was the highest-selling album of 2001. Since then, it’s been certified 12x Platinum in the USA alone, and is one of the highest-selling rock albums in history. It really did change the culture, and the album’s lyrics are still universal to any generation that might hear it.
