This Day In Music History: April 15th, 1997 – Sevendust release self-titled debut album

Having released a total of thirteen full-length studio albums, alt-metal mainstays Sevendust have always been a fan favorite. Having been one of rock and metal’s most beloved bands since they emerged onto the scene in the middle of the ’90s, they’ve evolved with the times – an acclaimed series of livestreams during COVID-19 certainly cements that notion.

On this day in 1997, though, everything changed for Sevendust. Or really, everything in their musical journeys truly began, with the release of their self-titled debut album. Merging groove metal and thrash influences with the powerful voice of now-iconic frontman Lajon Witherspoon, Sevendust arrived as nu-metal was beginning to make major inroads toward the mainstream. Reaping the benefits of being attributed to that scene, the album only sold 311 units in its first week of release. However, on the backs of some of their biggest singles to date like “Black”, “Bitch”, and “Terminator”, Sevendust eventually went Gold – no small feat for a band that had to change their name multiple times before even releasing an album. Millions of albums sold later, all you have to do is ask a Sevendust fan why they’re into the band, and odds are it may well have started here. Or Home. Or Animosity. You get the picture.
