Making any sort of an impact in a genre as crowded as progressive metalcore is, well, a tough task. The Northern managed to do just that a decade ago, though, and despite some bumps in the road since then, they’re still plugging away.
Their 2013 EP Imperium helped garner the band some fast attention, and 2017 full-length Solstice also helped raise the band’s profile. Having released a string of singles since then and an EP in 2021, The Northern have emerged with their first new music since 2021, “Hourglass”.
Fans of really any kind of progressive metalcore will want to get this song on their radar, and fast. Effortlessly shifting from heavier verses to a more melodic chorus, it’s something the band’s been good at since their inception. So whether you’re brand new to the band or were introduced to the band in their Imperium era, there’s a lot to enjoy here.
