Acting like Bring Me The Horizon haven’t had distinct pop influences in their music for years now is a fool’s game. No matter how much a section of their fanbase wants BMTH to be br00tal death metal or some shit, said pop influence is prominent, albeit in varying capacities. Even on the first edition of their 2020 Post Human EP series, the heavier tracks still carried huge choruses that were intentionally melodic and accessible for wider consumption. It’s not a new thing either, bands throughout the ages have done this – from hair metal to even nu-metal bands that hit the mainstream, like Linkin Park.
The new Bring Me The Horizon + Sigrid collaboration, “Bad Life”, might well throw you for a loop anyway. It’s as mainstream as it gets, completely devoid of anything one would call “heavy”. While it is certainly a catchy song, if it’s been a few years since you listened to Bring Me The Horizon, it is indeed jarring.
Sigrid, in any case, is a soon to be superstar. Already having established herself as a major electropop player with her 2019 debut full-length, the Norwegian musician is also releasing her sophomore album in early May. If you’re not familiar with her, you certainly will be soon. Regardless of your opinion of the quality of “Bad Life”, though, it makes a lot of sense for the two to collaborate. Sigrid’s name gets out to a different sector of the music scene, and vice versa. A win-win for everyone involved, unless of course you’re waiting for the breakdown that never comes.
