New Jersey-based pop-punk band Sucker Punch have released their brand new single and music video, “Worst Case Ontario.” Their sound leans towards the more angsty, gritty, punk-forward side of the pop-punk spectrum, comparable to that of The Story So Far.
Regarding the band’s inspiration for the song, guitarist Billy Butka says, “‘Worst Case Ontario’ is based off of the universe for cult classic movie Jennifer’s Body. It’s about a temptress luring you in, just to have your heart ripped out. We suppose those who’ve had their hearts metaphorically ripped out can relate as well.”
The high-energy track’s lyrics point to the film directly, with lines that reference the small town it is set in and describe the trapping of Jennifer’s victims. However, it’s true that lyrics like “Caught red handed, I’m wrapped around your fingertips / Right where you want me, no subtlety / I’m dying to feel your body lying next to mine / One last breath before you kill me from the inside,” can resonate as much for most heartbreaks as they can for literal human sacrifice. Driving riffs and rhythms from Sucker Punch make listening to “Worst Case Ontario” as thrilling as watching the iconic film that inspires it.
This is the lead single for their upcoming EP Better Pleasures, which is set for release this fall and will include a feature from Chris LoPorto, the vocalist of Pure Noise Records band and fellow New Jerseyans in Can’t Swim. Check out the music video for “Worst Case Ontario” below, directed by Eric DiCarlo (Lorna Shore, Chelsea Grin, Veil of Maya). It follows a whole other supernatural narrative with the band’s vocalist experiencing some unexpected side effects after having a mysterious drink.
